I have three kitties and have been spending a fortune on kitty litter. I didn't mind it in the past, but I need to tighten the belt now. I don't want to give them something chemical-laden, etc, but Dr. Elsey's is $16.99 a bag - but they LOVE it! They will use Sweet Scoop, but that is pricey, too. I guess there is no way around it if I want them to have a good quality litter?
Clumping vs. non-clumping - is clumping really more economical if we are adding to the box each day and dumping weekly?
I just want to clarify - I would never, ever do anything to jeopardize their health (i.e. make it unpleasant for them to use the box, etc). Just curious what you all use that might be cheaper but still good litter. If the "kids" are not pleased, I would go back to Dr. Elsey's. $$$$
Cheapest that cats love? Plain sand. If you have a place to store it, you should be able to get a 10 yard dump truck of it for somewhere in the neighborhood of $125. That pile of sand will last longer than your cat.
Cats will come from miles around just to use it. Ask any kid who ever had a sandbox. if you buy a truck load of sand for your cat, figure out a way to keep it covered, otherwise every cat in the neighborhood will be using it and you risk germs for your indoor cat.
For everyone who is reading (I'm sure OP already knows better) do not scoop your cat box into the toilet. The litter will clog the plumbing and the call from the plumber will be on the expensive side.
I use Tidy Cat, non-clumping. I don't want to play in the litter box every day.
You fix the box and dump it once a week and clean it out good (soap and water). It's about $7 for 25 lbs. I only have one cat and a bag lasts about two months at least
I have one cat, and I stock up on kitty litter when I have coupons. Currently, I have 4 25lb boxes of Scoop Away, 10 bags of Cat's Pride 10lb bags, and 1 jug of Tidy Cat (red cap). I bought the Scoop Away at Walmart, the Cat's Pride is $3 at Family Dollar, and I use my $1 off coupons, and the Tidy Cat is the last jug from when I stocked up last year.
Check Free Printable Coupons, Grocery Coupons & Online Coupons | Coupons.com for coupons every month, and there are some cat litter coupons listed on their site now. The Cat's Pride doesn't clump as well as the others, but I mix it in with the other litter. My litter box doesn't smell at all.
We have 3 cats and use the house brand clumping cat litter from Petco or Petsmart. We have both those stores here. That litter at each is similar, so I look for sales. They will match the prices on their websites. The best price I've seen is 40lbs for ~$9.50 at Petco.
My cat requires a dust-free litter (otherwise he sneezes constantly). I consider $16 for 40lb cheap, personally (Dr. Elsey's). I used to spend more for Cat's Pride.
My strategy to keep the box super clean (easier with one cat) is to keep the box filled with 4-5" of litter, and then scoop the clumps out at least daily, and then replace litter as needed. The urine never touches the bottom of the box. If he pees on the side of the box, I wipe it with a Clorox-wipe. I rarely have to replace the litter using this technique.
