My husband wanted to have a wedding and I did not. He really wanted it and I didn't have any real objections to it so we had one. We paid for it ourselves. My mom did buy my dress from David's Bridal as a gift.
For a wedding in NYC, it was probably as cheap as it could get for all of the stuff we did.
It was a really fun day---from strapping our keg into the backseat of our car to setting up the space we rented ourselves.
My memory is not what it use to be but I think it was around $1,300-$1,500 range. 100% of the expenses were food, drinks, and alcohol. All home cooked-Free labor. Wedding took part at my sister in laws house...which was acceptable in Asian traditional weddings.
I was married twice. Each time, I was married by a notary. I don't recall how much each notary charged but I know I paid much less than if I'd had a large (or even small) wedding.
Both times, we used notaries who specialized in marriages so it was still special. (I didn't want to just grab some random notary who was on his lunch break from Ups).
We got married at the house of the church member who performed the ceremony; maybe 15 people. Two plain gold bands; with some help my wife made her dress; small wedding cake. Probably cost us $300 or so in 1974.
