I wasn't sure where else to post this, but for the past few years I have been buying the cold water detergents so that I don't have to use warm water for my laundry, and this really helps to keep my electricity bill down. It seems like I cannot find it at any of the stores around here anymore, are they discontinuing it? For those of you who wash in cold water, what type of detergent do you use? I have noticed some of it not meant for cold water gets thick like molasses when it's cold.
I prefer powdered detergent -- just my preference -- and as long as I put the detergent in first and let the powder dissolve I have no problems. I like TIDE or CHEER (hard to find) but I know others on this board don't care for those. I just find Tide and Cheer remove stains really well -- although frequently I first treat the stain with a spray.
Many laundry detergents will work well in today's washers with cold water.
I RARELY, IF EVER, use hot or warm water , and I use ALL free and clear mostly {free of dyes and clear of colorants}.
Occasionally if I can get TIDE free and clear at a good price, I will use it on the heavier stained stuff {not much in our household}
ALso: unless your clothes are REALLY SOILED {kids grass, farm, dirty job}, you can count on only using HALF what they suggest to use for clean clothes...and HALF a dryer sheet {if you use them} for thhe fullest of loads works. TOWELS: wash all together and if you dryer dry, use NONE for fabric sheets, they absorb better without a coating" of softener and come out fresh and soft anyway. Learned the towel trick on TV.

Does the powder dissolve in cold water? I've never tried it, just assumed it wouldn't.
Though I personally don't like buying big plastic jugs of liquid detergent, I find that many times powdered detergent doesn't dissolve completely in cold water even when you put it in first. I hate seeing big white patches of undissolved detergent on clothes! This is much more of a problem in the winter I believe when the water is naturally much colder and takes longer to "warm up". If you have this issue, try liquid detergent.
I just bought cold water wash tide today at Kroger. I buy whatever good quality detergent that is on sale when I need to restock usually Tide, Gain, Era or All. I wash all my clothes in cold water except whites and then I use warm water. I have not had any problems with using cold water. I only use liquid detergent, I don't like the powders at all it never seems to dissolve all way.
I only use cold water and only use liquid detergents. I use Purex or All, both in the "hypoallergenic" variety, with no fragrances or dyes. They both work great.
I use cold water for most loads and just use Sam's generic detergent. We have really hard water here and liquid works much better than powder. I also can't get away with using less detergent because of the hard water.
