Like a lot of folks, I got rid of cable a while back, but I recently cancelled my home internet, too. Saves me a total of $71 per month.
I have internet at work and can tether my phone here at my apt to get on the internet. (I live alone)
I use an ATT GoPhone on the $45 per month plan that includes 4GB of high speed data that is throttled back to 128k after that, which is like having dial up.
I can't really stream any videos on 128K, but it still works for online message boards and bill pay and most surfing, but it's best to only have one tab open at once. For YouTube videos I will go do something else while I let it buffer.
If I really need to, I can buy an additional Gig of high speed data for $10.
Once I have some medical bills paid off, I may get internet again, but for now this works just fine.
I did this too during the lean times. I got rid of cable and internet. I used the data on my phone and went to the library. It was nice to not have a bill. I now pay $137 for cable, internet and a phone line I do not use. It is expensive but I use it everyday.
You should've just downgraded your internet plan and resigned as a new customer. I highly doubt $71 is the entry level price point of internet in your area.
Here in Seattle, the cheapest internet I can get is $65/month. I actually signed up because I thought I was going to get internet-only for $30/month, but it turns out that they lied. Dropped it after 3 months.
As a comment, I live "homeless" but my home is actually my minivan turned into an RV. So I do love to have 24/7 internet through my Wifi pod. But for mega download and high bandwidth, man do the Libraries around Chicago have lots of FREE high speed internet! I've gotten up to 230 Mbps download, loading up my Sager Gaming laptop with 300 GB of Steam games in one day! But the library noticed that and they throttle me the next time...
Hm. I only pay $55 after fees and taxes and that is for speed high enough to stream on the TV. hopefully when your medical bills are paid off you can find a reasonable rate to have it again. I loathe using the phone for anything but talking for the most part. But I understand that many use it as their pc.

I just did that. 10mbps for $19.99/mo out the door. Comcast/Xfinity through Amazon.com. Seriously, I thought I was having a stroke seeing cable TV/internet being "sold" on Amazon. It turned out to be legit even though when I called Comcast the week prior, their best price was $65/mo. Whatevs.

Wow! I don't know the speeds. Is that high enough to stream HD TV?
Good for you. I did the same thing at one point. It was nice not receiving a bill. The library and my antenna worked just fine.
