There is a trade-off between saving money and saving time, so I am curious as to how many stores you regularly buy food at and how often you visit them.
In San Antonio - just one ( there is only one major grocery store )
In Houston... in 1-2 only ( but at least there is a huge selection of really nice grocery stores!)
I do my shopping every 2-3 weeks.
We go to one of our neighborhood grocery stores about once a week for perishable stuff like dairy and produce. We go to Costco once a month and stock up on frozen stuff and meats. We have a freezer in the garage.
Like what?
They all stay fresh in the fridge. Bread get divided and frozen. Meat too. Milk and eggs - I never had problem with that. Veggies will be divided - some used fresh, some will be cleaned and put in freezer. Lettuce? I buy the Boston lettuce with roots - it stays fresh for 2-3 weeks easily. Fruit and veggies no problem. Yogurt, kefir, butter, O.J. stays fresh...
I never let anything stay long in a room temperature. When I need something from the fridge - I will take it out, and put back in right away.
We shop every 7-10 days. All of our stores are within a 3 mi. radius to our home. Produce goes into Debbie Meyers Green Bags and last up to 3 wks. Sam's Club for bulk items, I put the date on them when I open them up to know how long they last, dishwasher det. 10 mos. up to a yr., laundry det. 8 mos. I shop sales, Harris Teeter, The Fresh Market, Lowe's Foods. Walmart every 2 mos. for those pesky items, olives, steak sauce, ketchup etc. that are used once in awhile. We average $100 a week which includes everything and eat very well.
About 95% at one store, and 5% at the cut-rate generic store, where there is a genuine savings on a few items.
