LOL. As a working person who has never earned half as much as 36k in a year, I can assure you that it is possible to retire on 36k.
That means you have never earned more than $8.65/hour. Fred Myers in Portland is starting cashiers at $12.21 an hour, Safeway is starting them at $11.24, and at WinCo Foods it's $10.74. For Heaven's sake, one of the Portland McDonald's is offering $9.26 for starting crew members. Why have you not already applied?

Why does everyone assume that making more money is, by default, "helping oneself"? Maybe this person doesn't need or want more money. If that's the case, why waste time by selling it to someone else?

I guess it depends on your style of living. Do you just want to survive or do you want to enjoy your retirement? I doubt you could even survive on that amount of money and if you could it woudln't be a very great life. Most experts these days say a million isn't enough to retire with while I know many people do retire on less than a million. Don't you want to have control over your life, your living situation and not wind up in a state run facility being neglected? I could care less about money for material things but for security and a bit of comfort its incredibly important.

You can't survive on $36k/yr for one person? If we didn't have a mortgage or daycare to pay for we would have spent about $13.8k/ through 4 months this year or a pace of just north of $41k for a family of 3. This includes a $2k bedroom set for our master as well. It would be very easy to 'survive' off of $36k for one person if you had a paid for home in all but the most expensive areas of the US. You might not be living a life of luxury, but you wouldn't be on the corner begging for change either.

The sad part is that landing a crappy $12/hr job in that loser town is like winning the lottery and hitting the jackpot.
