I have an LG Spree smartphone, which was free when I signed up for Cricket Wireless. I don't use much data, so I chose the $30/month plan (unlimited talk and text, 1GB data).

Before that I had an iPhone on Verizon, but I decided that I would prefer something cheaper.

I am very happy with Cricket and my LG phone since that is really all I need.

Moto G unlocked from Amazon with Tracfone.

The phone was something like $125 on sale, and Tracfone BYOP is, what?, $11/month or so if you buy a year's time? Hard to beat if you're not a heavy user.

I also own a KarmaGo, although sadly they lost the ability to buy time forever with no monthly fee. It's now $3/month to keep it alive.

BLU Pure XR, unlocked gsm, no contracts, I pick the carrier I want, nobody controls the phone. Signed up for BLU's email alerts and got it for about $150 on sale with the Amazon new model intro promo. Been using BLU for years. Can;t beat the price and they have everything from cheapo's to feature rich high quality models, and did I mention, they are unlocked and owned by you.

My "sail fone" doesn't take pictures, send texts, browse the web, or play music. Have had only two cell phones since 1996 and their only tasks have been to contact Verizon service when the landline has been knocked out by a storm, maybe four or five times in 21 years. I also take it when driving in the event of a road emergency; none so far.

I'm probably the only person on this blue rock who uses a cell phone in this fashion, i.e., to make emergency calls.

I have an IPhone 5C, my wife has an iphone 5S. I paid $99 for mine and was under contract, but after about a year i switched plans at ATT where I went to pay just for service and they let me bring my phone over at no charge. Wife's was about $500 spread over monthly payments at 0% interest. Our plan is insanely cheap though through my work. We pay $49/month for 2 lines with unlimited text and minutes as well as 10GB/month that rolls over up to 20GBs.
