You'd be surprised at how many pennies are found outside gas station convenience stores. I pick them up and they add up. I use them for taxes on purchases. I am not concerned about "filth" since we all have anti-bacterial something on our persons or in our vehicles and use it often.

For me it's not worth bending over for less than a $5 bill, but my wife will pick up a penny, and recites "find a penny, pick it up, all the day you'll have good luck." The other day she found two pennies, so picked up one and left the other for someone else.
I like change in my pocket so when I buy things I can use them to get less change back lol.
I was brought up in a pretty poor family, so we have all learned to not take any $$$ for granted.
As long as it's not out of the way or stuck in poop or something, I will pick it up.
BTW, I almost NEVER find anything over a quarter for most of my life, but in the last 2 yrs I've found a 10 dollar bill, then later on a 20 dollar bill. Both bills reside in my wallet as good luck charms.
A penny... just as I learned at age 5 when walking to the store with Grandma Mary
who smacked me upside the head for NOT bending down to pick one up. besides the
general principle of it she knew I'd be begging for a penny when we passed the gumball
machine ... which she didn't give me that day saying "you have your own penny now"
(I think my Mom had put some germ fear in my head about stuff in the street)
I'll pick up anything down to a penny. Always have. My husband used to tease me about it, so one year I started off with an empty jar and put all the change I found into it all year. We had a dog which I took on a long walk every day and I almost always found at least one coin along those walks. Several times I picked up at least one each of penny, nickel, dime, and quarter all on one walk. At the end of the year there was about $35 in change in the jar and even though my husband pretended to be unimpressed, I was pretty happy about that.
By the way I also kept track and found that the most common coin on the street was a penny (of course), followed by quarter, dime, and then nickel. Nickels were surprisingly rare.
The most I ever found at once was $21, folded together. My son found a $100 bill at the mall when he was four years old, and my sister-in-law found a $100 bill on the sidewalk in Las Vegas.

I found a $100 bill two weeks ago on a sidewalk while shopping, I couldn't believe it, I thought it was play money at first, lol. I would pick up any coin and I pick up losing lottery tickets on the street to use as tax write-offs when I win "the big one."
I would not bother for anything less than a dollar, and even the dollar only if it were in decent condition. Anything lying in a puddle or covered in goo of any sort and I will pass it by.
Picking up pennies is completely pointless. There is literally nothing of value that can be purchased with a penny. Technically, there is nothing of value that you can purchase with any reasonable amount of pennies. Even with 25 pennies you cannot pay for parking, because meters do not take them.
Complete waste of time.
