I cook for one as if there were 12. Then eat one meal and freeze the rest in one or two day meals. That way I have variety and its a lot cheaper to fix more than less when you consider the energy cost. I cut the meat I buy that has to be cooked then (fish, an occasional steak) in meal sized portions and store them that way. That way there is no temptation to eat all of it since its there.

I have purchased evaporated milk to use in coffee and other hot drinks. It takes a tiny amount vs fresh milk and the taste is the same. I have a good supply of dry goods and am learning how to better freeze fruits like banannas (always remember to take off the skins!) so when I can't get to the store or they are for a good price I've got a stock. They make wonderful shlushies with frozen slices.

I wear a jacket on cold nights so the heat doesn't have to be on so high and in my bedroom use a small space heater which can be put at a minimum temperature so it doesn't get too cold at night rather than heating the room all day when nobody is there.

Lost of ways to save a little without even feeling you've lost anything.

If I chose (b) somebody please kill me as I have obviously sunk below the "no hope" point.

Mobil makes a synthetic oil that lasts 15,000 miles. Don't push it past 10k and change the filter every 5k. That can save a lot of money on oil changes.

Speaking of oil changes, most cars really don't need changed every 3,000 miles, w/today's advanced engines and better quality oils, one can easily go every 4,000 - 5,000 miles between them. This would save most people one or two trips to their mechanic each year. I didn't know about that synthetic oil though, does it work for all engines? How much more is it per quart?

synthetic oil aside, its a big myth that you need to change your oil every 3000 miles:

The 3,000 mile oil change is a myth - AutoblogGreen

Can you guess how it started? yup, places like jiffy lube started putting those little stickers on your windshield telling you to come back in 3000 miles. ...and we did...

Best thing to do is follow the guidelines in your owner's manual.

A lot of new cars have oil life monitors. They usually won't reset for a good 6,000 miles. Your owners manual says to follow this and therefore that is the bible. The guys at this quick change oil places will disagree, but they are just trying to make money.

Most non-car engines recommend oil changes based upon hours of use. If I knew how to install a hobbs meter in my car I would change oil based upon that. Someone driving 2000 miles/month on an uncongested highway will put far less time on the engine than someone driving 2000 miles/month driving in the city exclusively, stop and go traffic, etc. etc.

Here, the local grocery store with the lowest prices will not take internet coupons. Check yours and make sure.
