look for a website freecycle.org
I have given and received many many free items from being a member of The Freecycle Network
there is no fee to join..you do have to be accepted by the moderator. I belong to several surrounding towns. Once you are accepted bookmark the site and check several times a day if you can as things go quickly.

I was a member of FreeCycle for years, but got tired of a no-show rate of about 50% and the poor communication habits of the people who jump up within moments and state a desire for your item. I guess they ask for it first, then check ebay to see if anyone is spending for such items; if not, you never hear from them again.
Here in COLO SPGS, the moderators are so anal and rigid they ruin it for everyone. I dropped off the list and now just donate stuff to Goodwill instead, which is a lot less aggravating. If I really want to offer something for free, I use Craigslist.
I'm sure FreeCycle works fine for many people in other areas, and that's a good thing.

I am in a really small area, so freecycle hasn't worked out for me or my friends. There are so few members, there are only a few posts per month.

I belong to the Arlington VA F/C. It is well run and I have been very happy with all the folks I have transacted with. It is nice to see how happy people are with things I no longer need or want, and nice to see an empty space here and there

That's how it is in El Paso, TX also. It's why I stopped posting and started just donating to Goodwill.
Plus, it seems like there's more people wanting than giving.

Same here in COLO SPGS; way more "wanted" postings than "offers" of items.
Back in western Fairfax County, VA, we had a great group of thousands of people and really cool mods who understood their role was to facilitate the flow of goods between people, not micro-manage and be list nazi's.

This is THE most annoying thing about Freecycle. When I want to give stuff away, I want it gone and hate having so send emails back and forth. Also, almost no one says thank you. I mean seriously, is it that big of a deal to send an email back after receiving the item that simply says "thanks"..

I'd hace been happy just to get rid of stuff. What galled me the most was the people who said they'd show up at such and such a time, then didn't. In one instance, I even cleared and recharged an older cell phone for someone who wanted one to replace his daughter's lost one [and why would an 8 year old 'need' a cell phone anyway?], but I guess it was easier for him in the long run to just buy another one than drive a few extra miles and get one for free.

Cool. I have fond memories of the western Fairfax freecycle group, they even got together for coffee.
