The blanket statement set forth in the OP clearly isn't true. There are times when paying less results in an inferior product but certainly not always. You have to be SMART as well as frugal.
For example, I shop clearance racks a lot. Yesterday someone was in the store and paid full price but because today they are resetting the area I get 30% off the same item (actually, for most items 30% off isn't worth my time....I'd wait for 50%, preferably 75%). Some other favorite types of clearance items...restocked items (unused, undamaged...may be canceled special orders) may be heavily discounted if purchased at store A but returned to store B--if store B doesn't stock the item regularly it goes immediately to the clearance shelf. Seasonal clearance....nothing inferior about the product but because the demand for winter coats is low in March the price is lower as well. Put the coat in the closet until next November when demand is higher and people are paying full price. Department resets....when a new line of product is coming in a store will often clearance out the older model. Sometimes the 'old' product is the same as the new but the packaging is different. We've gotten a ton of good deals with reset clearance items.

I call BS too. When your grocery store runs a 2 for 1 sale you wait a week and pay more or buy another brand that is not on sale?

Maybe, if you are a shallow person to begin with....but it doesn't do much for me. *shrug* I don't need to show off money or spend it foolishly to feel better about myself and I might be worried that someone would be overly enthusiastic with their envy and try to rob me in the parking lot.
Check out The Millionaire Next Door. There are several good points made about those who appear to be rich and concern themselves with appearances vs. those who actually have accumulated wealth and yet don't stand out. Those who spend money to look rich or build self confidence by impressing others will most likely never accumulate any real wealth. I'd rather be wealthy than just look wealthy.
I've found this to be true IRL. The people I have known to be wealthy were the most down to earth and normal folks, not trying to impress, didn't walk around with wads of cash, bargain shoppers and wise with money, live well below their means, they own their home and drive paid for cars. You'd never guess their net worth. On the other hand, those who appear to have it all, brag about purchases, shop high end stores and always look good also have little net worth, rent furniture and lease cars and practically live paycheck to paycheck. You'd think they were rich...but just one paycheck or life mishap away from financial catastrophe.
Believe me when I say this: I want a Ferrari, its going to cost me £100,000. Thats too much, isn't it, the price is over inflated.
Luxury goods.
Limited market.
Limited production.
They can charge pretty much what they want (relative to the small pool of other specialised sports car manufacturers) - their market can afford it.
Plus, unlike say, a run of the mill Ford Mondeo, produced en masse, a well maintained and sparingly driven Ferrari will probably appreciate in price long term.
Price occasionally indicates quality. But is almost totally unreliable as a buying guide.
If I see a large price difference I'll look at the items more closely to see if it's justifiable.
I don't mind paying more for the better item. But I HATE spending more when there is
little difference.
I've been a sucker for the if it cost more - it must be better myth from time to time. About a year ago I bought some $45 Royal Robbins shirts at REI, and those damn, piece of crap shirts are already getting frayed, while my 10 year old $6 Bugle Boy shirts are still going strong...a little faded in color, but no holes, and no frays. I really got sucker punched on those $45 shirts!
