For the ultimate in Frugal Living :

These are both in the "food and drink" forum, but I just wanted to bring them to the attention of the frugal living peeps.

Cheers!

I've done it when desperate. It's best done in a city, I'd advise against doing it often in a small town because of the reputation problem.

Pizzerias, Burger King, McDonalds, and grocery stores are best if they're not locking their dumpsters (which happens much more frequently than a few years ago). Fast food places often throw out good food at closing time. Grocery stores throw out food that is a little past the fresh date but usually still good (though you shouldn't take fresh meat - prepared meats such as sausages can still be good because of preservatives).

Just smell the meat and cook it or feed it to the dog!

Begging is not what I do. I am a gentleman, I pay my way for everything.

What? It's not begging though.

I wouldn't do it unless I was really desperate for food. I don't think it's right to steal even if it's stuff that's being thrown away. Imo, the only time it's justified is if one is starving and broke.

If they throw it away it is not stealing. Just like the trash and recycle items you place on the curb for trash day. Once you have placed it there it is available for anyone who wants it, and it is legal to take it.

That is why you should always shred anything important before recycling or throwing in the trash.

Really? I thought it was different for businesses, that it was stealing as long as it's on the businesses property. Huh, learn something new everyday! Thanks. I still wouldn't do it though, just to much of an ick factor for me.
