Here's the story of Rachael, an 91-year old gem who bought a Mercury Comet back in 1964 and still owns it. She has put 540,000 miles on the car. Her tip is to buy things with LIFETIME guarantees. She drives herself all over the place, and she packs a handgun too.

In the 56 years she's had the car:

- J. C. Penney has replaced 7 mufflers at no charge.
- Sears has replaced 16 batteries at no charge.

I'm a bit the same way, buying new cars and keeping them as long as I can, usually 15-20 years per vehicle.

Add to the thread if you know of lifetime guarantees that people can take advantage of.

I ,too, seek to buy items that carry a "lifetime" warranty. However, it is important to note that "lifetime" doesn't mean your lifetime it means the vendors business "lifetime".

This can sometimes backfire in a bad economy such as we have now should the vendor go out of business or be bought out. So it's a good idea to keep an eye on the business health of who you buy from. An example of which is Circuit City recent bankruptcy and repurchase by another company.

I buy luggage with a lifetime warranty. I've already had 2 pieces knifed open by airline bag handlers, and they've been replaced.

How would a warranty help you for somebody else defacing your luggage. Warranties are made to protect the customer from manufacture defects, not idiots with knives

I have no idea, but I specifically asked the store I bought it from if they would replace the bag if it was destroyed though poor baggage handling, because it happens way too often to me. Every time, I take it back, and they replace it.

ETA: Language from the warranty states the warranty "covers repairs of a functional nature if the damage is caused by a common carrier through abuse or mishandling of your bag." Either way, the store I go to gives me a new bag, although the warranty does state that it covers just repairs.

I shop at REI for my outdoor gear because they have a lifetime satisfaction guarantee. I think carefully before returning anything, but they always give replacement or refund.

We bought 2 leather chairs from American Furniture Warehouse in colorado years ago, they were supposed to carry a lifetime warranty. After having the chairs worked on about 4 times they got mad and said if we wanted them fixed again it would cost $90. I guess they can change their minds, my DH even called the management, no deal.

Lifetime warranties are great, but most of them now exempt parts that break a lot or don't cover all aspects of the product.
