I suppose it could be the record number of hot sunny days this summer that has made it such a great year for hydrangea here. All types and colors seem to be gorgeous everywhere. I visited the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens last week and say colors of hydrangea I had never seen before. Pink and dark pink. Also saw pink pond lilies there. If you ever get a chance to visit this place I highly recommend it. It is very near Boothbay Harbor.
I have lived most of my life in the South and hydrangeas are right up there with nandina, azalea, dogwood as iconic Southern plants. It amazes me that they (hydrangeas) can be so great in Maine. Isn't it cold and snowy up there for months on end? Will these beautiful hydrangeas now in summer actually make it thru your frigid winters? If the answer is yes, then just about anybody can grow hydrangeas anywhere.
Here in N.C. mine are in too much sun and come fall I will definitely move then. They are making it but certainly not thriving. I would like to see pix too.
