The one thing to watch out for is if you have any animals that may be drinking from the fountain...because the mosquito treatments may poison them. So, we just stick to leaving ours on all the time because a few stray cats drink out of ours.

Mosquito dunks will not harm people, animals, fish.

As for bleach, here's the recomended formula for water purification that is drinkable; used for many, many years, and in 3rd world, war-torn areas:

2 drops of Regular Bleach per quart of water
8 drops of Regular Bleach per gallon of water

Oh, and if your pump is moving the water at a good pace, mosquitos can't lay eggs. They only lay in sagnent water.

What might I add to the water to kill them, without harming the finish of the fountain or the pump tubes. Also, the fountain does splash lightly into the surrounding garden, so any additives can't be toxic to the plants either.

Any suggestions?

Thanks
Mosquito rings work quite well. If you really want to do something hippy-dippy and live in a suitable climate you should purchase some mosquito fish to live in your fountain. Great fun.
