Hi! I'm new to the site, gardening, and home ownership. My husband and I bought a house last year that an elderly couple owned and had been vacant for a year. Almost 4 acres of woods (YAY!), but everything is very over grown. I'm wanting to make a trail, and am having a hard time removing all the smaller trees. I'm not the strongest. I don't even try to pull the ones larger than my thumb, so how to I remove them? Do I have to dig them up? Or is there a pet safe spray? Plus is there a best time to prune trees? Do you cut straight or at an angle? Hope I didn't ask to many questions.

A good sharp Machete always works. Chop them at ground level. If they sprout back up just hit the tender shoots and leave with professional strength round up from home depot.

You could also rent a mower like this to chop a trail for you. This one is a DR mower.

personally - I'm a dig-them-up kinda person. But - admittedly, I'm also not clearing a trail through 4 acres (just clearing some underbrush to plant DESIRABLE plants in, instead of more icky invasive honeysuckle).

If you aren't up to digging them up (its a great workout) - cutting them and spraying with a heavy duty brush killer is probably the best way to go. If you don't feel safe with a machete (they can be intimidating) - a good pair of larger jawed pruners is the way to go. I have a racheting pair with 3' handles - will probably handle a 2"+ diameter branch/trunk.

Great news on the forest -- I'm sure your pathway will be delightful once you get it cleared!

You can cut a tree of 8" or 10" diameter pretty easily with nothing more than a $10.99 curved limb saw from any hardware store.

I do it all the time and I am a small, not brawny woman.
