Hostas are a wonderful plant. They have so many variations of leaf color. I also love impatiens. They add a wonderful splash of color and are easy to maintain. If they get to sprawling, trim them back a little.

I would go with the hosta, too! There are so many varieties, easy for care/maintenance, plus great for areas without major sunshine. As previous poster said, small is key.
Previous owner had hostas on the east side, lots of sun, they looked small and pathetic. I moved them near some pines in my backyard where grass won't grow, you should see how big they are now. In 2 yrs. they tripled in size and now I'm dividing them.
