Besides shrubs, what other plant is nice in front of my livingroom window. What about Jananese maple tree? Other suggestion?

I like Rose Bushes that have thorns. Any kind of detterent for would be thieves is a good idea.

where are you located and what direction does the front face..Lots of things you can do but without knowing your area its hard to say...
I have mini-roses in front, coral bells and annuals..I'm in oregon with a south facing front yard..

I love Japanese maples; there are so many varieties that you'd have no problem finding one for the conditions outside your window.

I planted a butterfly garden outside my largest window; I love looking out at the butterfly bushes, Mexican petunia, knock-out roses, herbs, etc. ...

Again - it depends on the light conditions of the bed. Personally, I love "weeping" varieties as specimin plants. A weeping juniper would look nice.
