How long does it take for the lingering wasps to leave the area after the nest is gone?

We had a hornet problem for 2 - 3 years after the nest was destroyed. I guess it takes some time before the location is wiped from hive memory.

I had them it the gutter opening and they drove me nuts with the buzzing. The pest person told me
use that foam to plug the opening up which he did. They came one year and year 2 so far no
problem this year. We have wasps if that is it the same family of the hornet. I was told sevin dust
also work with a duster to kill them better than the spray? Seems they get the dust then bring it home
to kill the rest.
