I am pretty excited by my new banana tree!
We went to the UGA Bamboo Farm Fall Festival today. Among the things they grow there are banana groves to study the various kinds. Plants were for sale and I bought one for me and one for DIL.
I will keep it inside for the winter, then plant it in a sunny spot in the spring. They say that it will then be able to live through the next winter outside, and will produce some bananas. Love it. If you have not seen a banana flower, and how the bananas grow, they are amazing.
I finished mulching the new bed near the deck. I planted more camassia bulbs as part of the ongoing project of planting more edibles. I started laying the plastic on the south side of the property. I'm tired of trying to mow around the shrubs and trees there. It turns out I'll need a LOT more plastic. I'm going to take up the plastic and cover the area with mulch once the grass dies.
This weekend was eventful - we got the ground cleared for our 20x20 garden area, all the fence posts dug out, 7 posts concreted in, and all the additional materials we needed to put up the deer fence and build the gate and raised beds. Gotta go back to work Monday, but plan on completing next weekend. I already can't wait until spring!

Today we leveled and cleared rocks from the area and built eight 4x8 beds and put them in place. Tomorrow is supposed to have no rain so we'll put in the rest of the fence posts and go get soil. Then it's putting up the fencing and battle, next weekend. Taking a bit longer, but it's getting there!
I finally started removing my veggies, filled my big trash can in about an hour. I hate to see all these little green tomatoes go to waste but what can I do, they don't want to turn red. I have more work to do but this is a good start. Next weekend I plan on removing the rest of the tomatoes and what's left of the peppers. I still had a few little okra pods but I just pulled it it out.
But I'm so happy about the work done on our new garden I had to share!

You can put the tomatoes in a paper bag and they'll ripen. That's what I did today. I actually picked a few ripe ones a couple of days ago- really late for Chicago area. But today I pulled all the plants out and started mulling over what to do next year!
I planted the native "woodland" plants: itea, serviceberry, clethra and pawpaw. I have two more clethra, two serviceberry and one pawpaw left to plant! I transplanted a pawpaw from the front to the woods and picked out a well-draining spot for the dogwood.
I also decided I'm using highbush blueberry to line the northwest facing entrance to the woods. The color of the blueberries in the fall is really pretty and I'd like More! Hopefully Lowes still has the lot of them. I need to get a couple boulders for the deck plantings, too.
