Here is the deal: put in a swimming pool in the back yard where we have NO privacy at all...Not allowed to plant anything that creates a screen. We planted a Yoshino Cherry tree in one corner and a Crape Myrtle on the far side of the house. Looking for something to plant along the fence line in the back of the house. Thoughts? Can't have too deep/destructive roots b/c of the pool, must be fruitless, and the easier the better. I HATE Leland (sp?) cyprus after having to deal with them after a storm. Oh, and don't want the trees to be much taller than 25 feet. (We are looking to plant just two trees to avoid the screen look)

Any thought on Black Dragon evergreen? Any other ideas? We were looking at a Thundercloud Plum tree but kind of want something green in the yard since we have the other trees that bloom.

THANKS!

Easy...........I would plant a magnolia. You will have greenery year-round with its beautiful dark green/brown leaves, blooms if you treat it right, and privacy once it gets to a decent size.

Do magnolia's have deep, invasive root systems? I am afraid of roots pushing on the pool...

THANKS!

From what I understand, they have a shallow root system. The roots will spread, however, to match the width of the canopy of the tree. There are different varieties so I would pick one appropriate to the space.

How close is the tree to the pool? We have a Magnolia in our front yard and I'd hate to think of it being anywhere near our pool. At this time of year it is shedding its large leaves. Those can easily plug a skimmer. Then there are the seed pods Its a daily thing for me right now to pick them up off our driveway. We pick up literally 20 per day. The red seeds inside have already stained our driveway where I've missed one and DH has run over it with the car. I can just imagine what they would do to a pool.

How large of a tree do you need? I'd look for something in the juniper family or at least stick with evergreens.

thanks everyone. The pool is only about 20 feet from where we would be planting, so...

And, we already have a cherry tree to worry about with shedding, so I guess evergreen/juniper is the best way to go.

What about a single spruce tree (fat albert blue spruce)? Certainly a single one could not be considered a "screen" could it?

I love Blue Spruce, just not sure how tall they get. I think two of those would work well if not too tall. Thanks!

I planted a Fat Albert Blue Spruce 16 years ago. It was about 4' tall or shorter at the time of planting. It is about 14' tall and about 7' wide now.
