Rodents love pot. Trust me. I'm very experienced.
Your comment about attracting hippies is accurate, though. It also attracts profiteers who don't even have an interest in the drug or plant, they just want the quick money they can make by raiding crops at harvest time. Been through that a couple times myself.

mums and garlic flower, marigolds and a few other keeps animals away from plants. Marigolds actually protect plants against bugs as well.

HA! An elderly lady near Austin was terrorized a couple years ago because her back yard was full of a native weed that looks slightly like pot. It had been spotted from the air. They tore her house apart looking for something illegal and didn't find anything.
The old "back of the lot" trick only works if you know how to disguise it from aerial surveillance. Of course if you live on the West Coast you probably won't get hassled by law enforcement. They have more enlightened attitudes about pot than here in Bush Country, where it's all the rage to get liquored up and shoot anything non-human that moves, but don't dare take a toke off a joint.

Hey, 71 years old? If she was the one smoking the stuff at least let her have one plant! My thinking is that she possibly has kids/grandkids helping her to think that his was a good remedy for keeping animals away. I could be wrong and she just may have a liking for the "green". Funny story...but not so funny for her I am sure. I have to feel badly for her.

I have lived here in Humboldt county of northern California since 1992 and seven were lived in the part of the county that is used for growing marijauna. I can attest to the fact that all animals except for the dogs love the plant. Dogs don't for some reason. Garlic is a wonderful feeding deterent for most animals, wether as a companion plant or as a spray to deter insects, deer, rabbits and many other creatures, except for humans. I used to spray my strawberries and vegetables to deter depredation of my garden, I did not grow pot and do not know if garlic works on it, but I do know that is works on plant mildew, aphids, white flies, mold, ants and too many to mention. It kills the mold on my roses and rids them of aphids. Most marigolds, daisys and feverfews contain pyrithrums to some content and it is an insect nervine; it parylizes them .

I have an Arelia on my lanai and people often mistake it for a pot plant ! I also intent to plant a Swamp Mallow Hibiscus near my fence line and I'm sure I'll have to explain to my neighbor that, no, it's not marijuana.......because I plant those over on the OTHER fence line ! Just kidding.....sort of..... !
I too live behind enemy lines (Florida), so I would not take a chance. I'm in the city and we have police choppers that fly overhead. I don't think they're looking for pot growers, but it would be silly for someone to take a chance in our city.

Note to self: when offered fresh strawberries by TheDragonslayer, be sure to say "I'm allergic to them."
The worst fruit salad I ever had was in an organic restaurant in Eugene, Oregon, where they apparently used the same cutting board for their garlic and fruit. There's nothing quite as disgusting to me as garlic-flavored fruit. But I'm sure you had ways to keep the flavor out of the berries.
