...and how do you kill them.

We bought our first house Nov 2010, so I'm still pretty new to this home gardening thing. Last year it was Nutsedge, now it's an attack by whatever this stuff is. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Pictures 1-3 are the primary offender. Pic 4 is another weed and pic 5 is what I assume is a gopher mound?

well pic # 4 reminds me of a hardy gerenium leafe probably Geranium sanguineum

in the first pic the round eaves in the center of the patch looks like black locust, and the other leaves remind me of some form of sumac

Geranium sanguineum huh? I'll have to check into that. Thanks for the reply.

I believe the round leaves in pic #1 are what the slender leaves look like at first. They are the same plant.

Looks like bamboo to me. I definitely looks like a tree, not a "weed."

I think the "primary weed" may be a chamberbitter/gripeweed/little mimosa (Phyllanthus urinaria). HGIC 2314 Chamberbitter : Extension : Clemson University : South Carolina According to a few web searches, it has medicinal uses as well.

I tried pulling them and it's hard to get the root. Any idea about an herbicide for it, whatever it is? Are we talking broadleaf herbicide here?

Thanks again for the replies.

Herbicides are not good for the environment.

1) is a terrible weed, Its Crownvetch, sometimes they plant it along the roadsides or interstate for erosion,to get rid of it, you need to pull it out, dig, it pulls out easy, if you have alot it will take a long time, the seeds are set for this year, or use total vegetation killer ( but nothing else will grow in that spot for a year or two) or smother it (but some will come back)

http://dnr.wi.gov/invasives/fact/crown_vetch.htm (broken link)

3) is wild geranium

last picture does look like poo, but it could be spores or some type of lichen

You can also search the USDA in your area, or type weeds in (state) the weeds will show in your area
