We noticed a few days ago that there are no leaves yet on our backyard Norway maple tree? We're in the northeast, Zone 6b, and all the other trees in the neighborhood are at least starting leaves or even in full leaf while this tree is bare and looks like it has the very earliest stages of leaf buds. Any ideas on what could be going on? I can't think of anything stressful that could have happened to kill it or stop it from growing.

It's a Crimson King maple, it was a big, well-established tree when we moved into our house 15 years ago so I'd say it's at least 25 years old.
Looks like the one in picture 4 http://www.maple-trees.com/pages/map...135=3&dir135=&

It could be in decline or maybe it's nothing and it's just is a late bloomer.

What happened to the tree in the between now and the last growing season?
How did it look last year?

Lots of trees bud late. We have 100s of black walnuts around us that still look dead while almost everything else is fully foliaged. I think some oaks still have nothing.

It looked fine last year. We did some thinning in June but not much--I'd say maybe 5-7% of the branches at most.

I really can't think of anything that could have happened since last fall. Hoping it's just being a late bloomer because it's a beautiful tree (even though I know it's an invasive) and it would be a big undertaking to cut it down if it's dead.

I should look up old photos and see what foliage looked like in past springs.
