I watered too much today & flooded out about 5 seeds. I should of been more careful. I replanted a few seeds (1" deep) but im not sure how this is going to play out. This yr might be a washout. I did fertilize yesterday.

I guess that would depend where you are in cali?
3 months should be enough.

I was told to lay the seeds on their side and cover with 1" of soil like you did.

You dont have to do that. Last yr i layed the seeds a few inches deep & flat. The vines grew very fast. This yr i layed them flat & approx 1" deep. Time will tell. I live in a hot climate (95 today) but the nights are cool.

Your right you can stick them in the ground vertically and they will grow.
but
The pumpkin geeks say if you plant them horizontally (laying on their side) that is gives you a stronger and stockier stem. It doesn't get a tall stem with the seed-leaf. I tried it and it "seemed" to make a "difference"

Its too late now. Ill plant the seeds vertically next may. According to the directions on the packet it takes 7-14 days to sprout & 100-120 to harvest. It mentions nothing about what way to plant the seed. I just hope to have some orange pumpkins on the vines by oct 1st. That gives me about 66 days. Ill just hope for the best but i did flood out some seeds & i dont know if they were from the front or back row (i have 2 rows with 4 seeds in each row).

Its looking good now & the sprouts are just starting to break through. Pumpkins love the sun & water but the days are getting shorter now. Time will tell.

Our pumpkin plant is about the same age and was probably about the same size as yours last week. It has really started to spread in the last week, I mean REALLY grow. The sudden growth is amazing, it spreads more every day. We have a lot of blooms. Have you fertilized yours?

Are you referring to the first time i planted the seed in late may ? By 7 weeks the vines should be quite long. Mine werent & some of the leaves were turning yellow & falling off. I did fertilize both times & its looking good so far. The 2nd planting was july 24th.

I planted my Kabocha at the end of June and the vines are really growing but the leaves at the base are turning yellow. All else looks healthy though. I also have a lot of male flowers.

Yes, I meant the first time. It's my son's plant actually, he planted one seed in a pot in early June. We transplanted it into the ground about 3 weeks later. Growth was slow until recently, and now it's growing like crazy. The month of June here was actually kind of cool, which might have delayed growth. I have fertilized once or twice and will do it again in the next few days. We've lost a few yellow leaves at the base, but our biggest battle is slugs.
