I just did mine today, raked them up in back and ran the lawnmower over them, less bending over then bagging them and nothing in the landfill.
You might be shocked at how much they want to blow leaves around. I was quoted $80 to do a small lot . Then they started recalculating when I showed them the back yard. Couldn't see spending that amount so went to work.
We have 1acre we don't rake anymore we use the mulcher on the mower and place some in the compost bin or use it as mulch around the garden beds. Helps keep the weeds down and the soil moist.
Use a mulching mower and mulch them. Unless they are close enough to the house to blow or drift into the gutters, I would not even think about raking them. They will rot and go right back into the earth. The winter winds will blow them and they will disintegrate - if it bothers you too much close the curtains!!!
I have never raked my leaves. I have either just run over them with a mower--they make great fertilizer for the lawn--or just let them decompose naturally. Even when I had a city lot, that's how I handled my leaves. It sure saves alot of time and expense--and it's better for the lawn.
Also, dumping leaves in the woods is a terrible idea. It wipes out that area for potential wildflowers! Instead, make a compost pile in your garden.
We mulch & compost. We enjoy being outside AND the benefits of exercise.
Ditto. The leaves are also useful for getting rid of grass in certain areas, mulching around shrubs/perennials and the chickens really love scratching in piles of leaves, so I put some in their yard. I am (still) trying to get fit and reduce my...cough...girth, so it is pretty decent exercise. I try to be sensible to avoid hurting my back.
I use a blower/vacuum thingy in addition to the rake.
I have a 1/2 acre and part of it is woods. I run over over the leaves with a lawn mower. I'll run the lawn mower anytime it's dry out even at night since it is now dark at 5PM. Since the leaves keep coming back, I'll keep doing it until the weather is too bad. I think I ran the lawn mower last year on 12/31.
Some of my neighbors hire lawn companies who hauls the leaves away, one vacuums the leaves and hauls them to the recycling center and a couple of others rake and haul theirs into the woods. I wish I could say that mulching the leaves has helped my lawn but I can't see much of a difference between my yard and the neighbors and I have done this for 16 years.
I never rake leaves heck thats next years food for my trees. by spring there is no sign of them after the snow melts. My neighbor rakes and bags all their leaves and leaves them out for the trash so I grab them before the trash comes and till them into the garden. raking leaves makes no sense to me at all unless you like buying fertilizer after paying to dump fertilizer.
I mulch most of mine into the lawn, but some types of oak leaves don't mulch very well, so I use my lawn sweeper and dump them at the edge of the woods.
I have never understood why some people bag leaves up like garbage, if I did that I'd have two dump truck loads.
