We had one growing up in the hot, dry, San Fernando Valley in the 1960s and 1970s. My mom insisted we have one. All I remember was going out there and pulling weeds for hours. It sucked.

I don't think I've ever seen a dichondra lawn since then.

Were they the "in" lawn at one time? Who had them? Were they more popular in certain climates?

Dichondra was in vogue during the sixties and seventies in SoCal. I probably would never have had to cut my dichondra, but the clover kept popping up and spoiling the look. We didn't have any other weeds but the Lucerne moths, cutworms, or whatever they were would cause brown spots. You also had to avoid walking on the lawn before the dew evaporated. Dichondra may have fell out of favor because it couldn't handle heavy traffic as could grass lawns.

Ugh, not on purpose. It's taken over 1/3 of my front lawn, with some clover... trying to figure out how to get rid of it while helping to spread my St Augustine. Just finished aerating it last week, since everything I am reading says to improve soil structure first.

The last time I saw dichondra was in a large planter pot at disneyland. The pot had a tree in it and dicondra surrounded the tree in the pot. I was so surprised I took a photo of it "Look! Dichondra!"
