Whenever I mow, dig, etc in my lawn, it seems to disturb small flies in my lawn that come up and swarm everywhere. They don't look like mesquitos, kinda look like gnats but not tiny. And they bite, which is the part that bothers me the most.

I live in Connecticut.

Any idea what they are and how I can get rid of them?

I'll take a picture when I can and post.

Sounds like it may be a buffalo gnat: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_fly

It says they like to lay their eggs in flowing water - is there any nearby? Are you overwatering and leaving lots of little areas for them to lay eggs?

Apparently they don't like cedar, so perhaps if you have areas of your garden where you could lay down some cedar chips, they wouldn't frequent the area so much.

Outside of that, you may just need to use DEET products, or buy a beekeeper hat and wear long sleeves, socks, and shoes.
