We just finished landscaping our new construction home in the last few months, so all the soil is new. This thing has cropped up and we've no idea what it is. The leaves are huge and furry. The stems are thick and furry/sticky. It has lighter green shoots coming out of it. It has grown VERY quickly.
No flowers (as yet), but the thing has only been there for about 3 weeks!

google image wild gourd--they have various leaf forms depending on water and soil and bitter tasting flesh...
Do a search (I used Google) for Wild Cucumber, and you will see. I suspect it is one of these. Or, maybe a stray seed from squash. Did you use compost that may have had cucurbit seeds of some type in it?
Cool. It grows like 6 inches a day (no, I'm NOT kidding) and keeps sending out more light green shoots, which start out as corkscrews then become straight. I'm waiting/hoping for flowers or something.
If the thing ever bears fruit, I'm gonna make sure I get some seeds for next year. This thing is just amazing! I'll follow up with photo's if it ever blooms. Thanks everyone.

It looks most like a pumpkin or pumpkin relative and the growth patterns is a match. Good luck with the experiment!
Well, the mystery plant is continuing to grow at lightening speed. It now measures nearly 8 feet long and has sprouted a yellow flower. More flowers will be sprouting today, from the look if it. It had tendrils that were beginning to attach to the leaves of the nearby ferns, so we tore those off to make sure this mystery plant doesn't strangle or damage the ferns.
Anymore ideas of what this thing is? We're from AZ where everything grows ever so slowly, so this thing is a real treat for us!
