I call schemes like this "Gimmick Gardening", similar to that process (forget name) that relies on sawdust and chemical fertilizers, or people using Aerogardens. There is absolutely nothing wrong with pursuing these gimmicks as a hobby, and much more worthwhile than watching TV or whatever, but it's not sustainable agriculture. Just go to Home Depot and buy a sack of Miracle Grow potting soil, poke holes in the bag and plant and grow directly in the bag. I've done it, it actually works pretty good, but that didn't make me a gardener or farmer.
