I just finished having a large tree removed from my yard in No Virginia. Is it too late for me to put down soil and seed? Do I need to wait until spring to plant grass?
It's not too late to seed in NoVa, but success will depend on how long the weather stays warm. If the seed has time to germinate and establish itself before the frosty stuff comes along, you'll be a step ahead of the weeds in the Spring. If the mercury plunges, you might have to start over. The other option is dormant-seeding maybe in early December once it's gotten cold for good. The seed will not germinate until the soil warms up again in the Spring, but it will already be in the ground and ready to go when the right moment comes along which will take some 2014 guesswork out of the equation.
Fairlaker - great info. This is my first yard so am learning. Had never heard the term dormant seeding.
