I agree with the poster who suggested a corner accent fence. You could put up two panels of a picket fence at a 90 degree angle, or use a split rail corner post and some rails angling down to the ground. It would cost about $50 and could be done in an afternoon. It's possible with just a shovel, but a power auger rental from Home Depot is like $25 and will make it really easy as long as there's no tree roots in the way. Or you could use a post hole digger and digging bar.
Since you're worried about cars too, you might want to nail on a few reflectors so the fence is visible from the street. You could even add your house number.
I've also been looking for a solution for a corner. Our corner lot has, since the house was built 50yrs ago[knew the prior owners] , been surrounded by hedges[yew & forsythia] on 2 sides - front & 1 side. For some weird reason, our town has decided to gift us with curbing & sidewalk. [I say weird because they will be sidewalks to nowhere - no walks on connecting streets etc- the closest sidewalk is a half a mile away]. It's still being fought but they are taking it to eminent domain and I imagine we will all give in at some point. So --- the corner will be "out there". There are woods across the street, & the road inspires fast driving. But for the hedges would have had 2 accidents in my front yard. Pretty obvious I hate the sidewalk idea, but at this point I need to think about a solution for what appears to be inevitable.
The post & rail thing with a planting behind it sounds like a good way to go. The corner post with one complete rail section either side, and the sloped down section after that. They sell pre-made corner units of fencing, but I'll never be caught buying plastic fencing, and the picket type is too cutsy for our woodsy yard. Masonry corner post is too formal unless it was rounded cobble type stone. Reflectors are a good idea!
I still need to figure out how/what to replace the yew hedge across the front. I will truly hate not having that barrier from noise, dirt, privacy. Plus 2 of our oaks will go -- ugh. Our little piece of wooded lot is being dragged into the burbs.
I'm wondering if ornamental grasses have a lot of upkeep. Or can you just plop them out there? I know some don't require watering other than rain. Any shrubs that don't require water? What about a short rail fence with just one piece of wood along the top between posts?
