I live in Massachusetts and I have these plants growing all over my backyard, all of them are very short and cover lots of ground (Groups of like 8-12 at once usually) and I was wondering if anyone here happened to know what they are? The pictures are from today, May 9. Thanks ahead of time!

Yeah, the first one looks like ajuga, but maybe an older, more common kind or something, because it's not as pretty as the two cultivated varieties I have in my yard.

The second one is a common wildflower that I used to know the name of but have forgotten. A large, thick stand of it is just beautiful in the spring....the purple tops just glow. We used to have a big patch of it in the edge of a yard in a rent house we lived in, and we always mowed around it until it was done.

I wish I could remember even a part of the name of that so I could find it on google, but I just can't. *sigh* Old age stinks.

Ha! I remembered! Deadnettle. Lamium purpureum.

There is a cultivated variety of Lamium that is very pretty.

It's rare that things grow in my back yard besides grass, so I'm considering taking them both and putting them together in a small bed off the the far back of my yard to make things look a little bit nicer back there. As long as it doesn't spread too out of control (don't want my entire yard covered in it.) I'm fine with it.

Thanks for the fast responses guys, I really appreciate it.

The photo with the dandelions also has ajuga (with the periwinkle flowers). Love it as a ground cover; you can mow it and it comes back. In the spring, if you let the flowers grow this is what it looks like:

It's purple deadnettle...an awful weed. It's everywhere here in the early spring, roadsides, lawns, fields, you name it. Easy to pull up though, thank goodness.

Oh my, you really don't want to try to keep it - it will cover your lawn without any effort at all...it's a bonifide WEED.

I think purple deadnettle is beautiful. And it tastes pretty good too.

Another name is heal-all. It's a very common, invasive European weed in the mint family which once was considered useful for poltices, as its common name indicates. sorry, I don't have its Latin name at hand...

(forgive the erratic capitalization - keyboard issues).
