Now I'm trying to think of what Rabbit species are in the North Eastern States. that picture does not look like the common Cottontail (Belgian Hare) Looks more like one of our Western Jack Rabbits.

Wonder if it might be a snowshoe that hasn't gotten all of his summer coloration yet.

So are you saying they aren't common around here? Looks like it's the southmost extent of the range.

This is interesting to me because we had Snowy Owls show up this past Fall and Winter AND the Rough Legged Hawk as well which nests in the arctic.

So do you think this snowshoe is also from the north more??

Here's a map of their range.

When I was a kid growing up. In the 1940-50s I used hunt snowshoes in the Winter when they were all white. We used eat the Rabbit and sell the white pelts.

I only saw one Snowy owl in CT and that was in 1950 The year we moved to Tariffville. Remember it well it had grabbed the neighbors little terrier puppy and there was quite a ruckus. Finally an old woman with a broom chased the owl off and rescued the dog.

Up here we see them quite often. They are daytime hunters and very impressive.

Plan Fail. Apparently it's sneaking into my garden still.

Unfortunately for the Bunny I had my surveillance camera set on the garden. LOL.

So as I was having my coffee I was watching the screen and like clockwork the bunny decides to sneak in at 6:45am.

So I sprayed the hose, it went to far side of garden. I went to put up the fence to trap it and it realized it so it took off and found a way out.

Guess where it went... In the patch I left unmowed. At the end watch where I pan to the right. That's the afternoon area it goes into or if it feels threatened from here. Nice shrubs nearby

I can easily just fence in the garden and be done but now it's a game and a race against time. Leaving it open to try to catch it still

New developments!

Was watching and waiting for the one bunny to go in garden. Instead he chose not to.

So I go around the house and low and behold another similar size in my backyard.. THERES 2! As I go around the rest of house I saw a tiny baby bunny half the size of the one I've been seeing..

Then!!! Corner of my eye I saw a shrub swaying... (not windy!).. I look over and a cat chased a HUGE rabbit out of the shrubs and I heard baby crying. Not sure if cat got one or it was crying because mother left. It stopped after 2 minutes and I couldn't find the mom. So maybe she went back to litter.

SO apparently it's not just me and that 1 bunny. I'm gonna have a whole posse soon. LOL

This year is abosolutely insane with rabbits. Could the long winter be the cause of more rabbits?

It was imminent. But once again came into the garden to eat my veggies this evening.

Finally trapped it, gently grabbed it, and brought it to a safe woodsy spot a mile away. It jumped 2 feet out of this pot before I even tilted it down. Safely ran off and was free.

New Home. Lots of greens to eat here.
