Poa Annua. Absolutely my biggest PITA. Can't prevent it from seeding as I have to reseed my fescue every fall, so I can't put down a pre-emergent. Can't kill it with anything but Roundup, but doesn't matter as it just reseeds the next season, and the seeds can be dormant for YEARS in the soil. Once it's in the lawn, the only way to get rid of it that I can figure is to just kill the entire area and leave it dead for an entire year to keep it from reseeding. But I sure am not going to do that. I guess eventually it will just take over the d@mn lawn.
ChessieMom: I found out this year you can use mesotrione as a pre-emergent while seeding. I will give this a try this Fall when I overseed my fescue. Just bought a bottle online for $65. It sells under the brand name Tenacity. Scotts starting selling a new starter fertilizer this year with mesotrione in it. It's good for about 4 weeks, then you need to re-apply the mesotrione in a month, after the seedlings have been mowed 2-3 times.
What's the problem with Creeping Charlie? This is the first year I've really noticed it. It seems fairly benign to me. Easy to pull up, and it looks decent even if you don't in my opinion. I'm just letting it go as a free and easy ground cover.
The creeping charlie has popped up over my whole yard and garden. Too much to pull up, will try borax when the rain stops. Then there's violets, they have spread all over the lawn, don't know how to hit those. Then there my columbine and sweet william just exploded and took over a hosta bed, will have to pull those out. They have also jumped from the very back of the yard to the front and are trying to take over that hosta bed.
This winter was a beast but the plants have thrived and gone wild. I'm amazed.
Hail. We had 5 inches of it the other day in parts of Denver. So many of my neighbors and friends have lost plants. I was wrapped in a damn plastic tarp for protection, trying to cover up my seedlings!
Personally, I'm thinking of overseeding with white clover. THERE...it's all weeds! on PURPOSE! LOL
It makes me wonder if we're all just going about it wrong. LOL We fight SO hard to keep the lawn green. The plants which require benign neglect, are the ones that thrive in the lawn. The ones that are wimpy and easily overgrown....are the ones we're fighting to keep alive.
We've weeded and overseeded, several times...but you know...I've realized that there are only just so many hours in a day and there are so many other things that rank so very much higher than a "weedless" lawn.
Basically, the only "time-frugal" way of weeding the lawn is with chemicals. It's just not worth it to me....poisoning Earth, so that my lawn looks purty...seems, well...kind of irresponsible and selfish, IMHO. I'd rather spend my "spare" time weeding the vegetable and flower gardens. Heaven knows, between the house, buildings and the designated garden areas and greenhouse....there won't be no lawn weedin' goin' on here. The best I can do is try to mow often enough to keep it looking fairly "kept up". In spite of having several buildings and various gardens on the property, I still mow approximately 10,000 sq ft of lawn...I sure as heck ain't weedin' it too.
I have many weeks where there is barely time to mow the lawn, much less do the other yardwork I need to do. There is no freakin' way I could manage the weeds in my beds and yard without using chemicals. I should own stock in Monsanto. My lawn is far from perfect, but it's a good as it's going to get I'm afraid.

Thanks for the info. I will check into that!
edit: Hmm...this doesn't sound very promising.
Tenacity is extremely safe on most turf species prior to reseeding and will effectively control crabgrass or
broadleaf weeds when applied to a bare soil prior to seeding.
However, Tenacity is a poor preemergence herbicide when applied to a turfed soil.

Ohmigosh, I have quite a visual of this! Now that's dedication.

Aww, I already have it so I'll give it a try anyway. I stumbled upon it because I found it is the only herbicide on the market that will selectively kill nimbleweed.
