Got as a stick from Arbor Day Foundation in 2011
put in a temporary spot south facing side blocked by north winter winds
waited until December 2013 to move it (dormant) into permanent spot..

Was very sad it didn't bloom. :-(

I contacted ADF and showed them pictures and they said it looks like its dead based on the scratch test being brown and not green. So I'm waiting for them to send me 10 new trees (sticks) in the Fall.

Such a beautiful Eastern Red Bud tree I was hoping to see bloom.

I left it in the ground because I wasn't ready to replace it with anything yet...

Today I look down and was shocked...

First... Some pics of the move and the scratch test.

Temporary Spot from a stick to this..

Dug up

Put into new hole. No fertilizer. Just natural soil and little Compost.

March, April, May came...The Scratch Test

No Green under the bark!

Today....

So whats going to happen? Is the tree coming back to life or am I getting a new tree from the new shoots?

well it might still be alive but if the central leader trunk isn't alive higher up you will end up with a redbud bush and not a tree. BTW looks like you performed a gouge test instead of a scratch test which can usually be done with a fingernail.

lol. Finger nail test wasn't showing green so I had to dig deeper to hope for some. Something tells me like your saying if the tree is dead above there I wont have a "tree" anymore.

Felt like I posted this the other day. Wow its been 6 yrs????

So take a look at how well this tree is doing! It never was dead.

Every Spring it has pink/purple flowers, then in Summer it has huge leaves and canopy.

April 2019

And here it is in the Summer. I did prune it this past Fall to shape it up better. Not sure what to do with the multiple trunks though.

Leaning towards the sunlight..

From a FREE "STICK" to this in just 8 yrs.

It's WONDERFUL to see a tree came back from the "dead"

They are tough and resilient. It's wonderful to see life.

Congratulations!

I've had good luck from the Arbor Day trees. It takes a time for them to recover from a mailing.

It's a bit late to decide about the multiple trunks, I'd leave them at this point. You should have snapped them off when they were young shoots.

I like the multiple trunks. Congrats on your tree living.

Did they send you 10 more sticks? What happened with those?

I ended up leaving them but pruning the tree. Kinda a crappy spot for it. I got Electric wires on 1 side, the house on 1 side, and sunlight on 1 side. You can see its leaning towards the sun from a certain angle. I hate to take it down because its just so pretty in Spring.

Blooms are actually purple, camera made them pink here. lol

I'm done for now getting trees. I gave 3 to different neighbors, kept 3, and 4 didn't make it.

Here's the other free tree from them.
