I'm about to pick the first peas from the garden. They are pole peas. Someone gave me the seeds this spring so I decided to try them. The problem is, peas taste great, raw. When you cook them they may as well come out of a can. They aren't bright green anymore and they lose that fresh taste.

So is there any way to cook them that makes them taste as good as they do raw? Maybe just steam them for a minute or two so they can soften?

Fresh picked peas should only take a 60-90 seconds to cook. Bring a small amount of water to boiling, add a bit of salt (sparingly), add peas, when they've turned bright green, they are done. Some mint or savory or rosemary, or just plain, or a little pat of butter, that's all you need.

Ours never make it into the house, I guess I didn't put in enough plants. I eat them while out watering. While they may not taste as good cooked, they do taste a lot better than store-bought that have been shipped and stored. Mine are edible pod so I just pop the whole thing into my mouth. If you really want them to taste better cooked, steam them without being in contact with the boiling water. Use a rice steamer, or one of those bamboo steamers that sits on top of the pot of boiling water.

Mine also have a problem making it inside. The ones that do make it may be eaten raw as a snack or boiled as above or microwaved for as short a time as possible.I did learn the hard way the first year when I nuked them for 4 minutes. They actually vaporized :0

I always had pole beans but due to my very limited space now, a friend stopped by early this spring with a packet of pole PEAS for me to try. They are doing well now on the deck--I think I will take the advice of steaming them for only a minute or so. Thanks. (as long as some of them actually make it into the house and not into my mouth first.)

I don't know what pole peas are. We had shelling peas growing last season. DH (our cook) puts them in a small covered bowl with a pat of butter and microwaves them 1-2 minutes for 2 servings.

I popped open one pod tonight and ate the contents. They are soooo sweet. No, they may not last long enough for actual cooking.

Both beans and peas are available in bush or pole (climbing) varieties. I prefer pole for both because they are easier to find and pick.
