Is aerating the lawn in fall recommended with overseeding? I'm wondering if it will do anything or it is a waste of time. Does anyone do this?

Lots of different factors that come into play but yes this is the standard wisdom.

Aerating is never a waste of time, it's very beneficial (oxygen and nutrient wise) for the growth of the grass.

Do it, yes. And if you can sprinkle a bit of compost over it after the areation is done, that would be a huge bonus for the lawn. We aerate every fall. It relieves compaction and everything else said above.

what equipment do you use for aeration? I've seen manual step on ones (for small yard) or big machines that go behind a tractor, but is there anything in between?

I have my yard aerated and reseeded every year.
It's an extra service my mowing service will provide (for a fee).
(They also soil test every year.)

I really think it helps my yard.
Then again I have a friend who never has her's done. And her yard looks OK.

For me, the cost is not prohibitive so I do it as sort of 'extra insurance' that the yard is healthy.
And it does look like a golf course, so my service must be doing something right.

Is there an organic way to aerate the soil? My back yard is fenced in, so I tried aerating manually and decided halfway through - never again.

We have a lawn service do it and they use a big motorized stand-up machine. We have three acres and about an acre of that is lawn. The pro machine does a much better job than we could do, even with an attachment for our lawn tractor. Using the push type takes some muscle.

Many lawn services do it pretty cheap.

Core aeration needs to be done mechanically. The only "organic" method I can think of is having your lawn dug up by raccoons or skunks looking for grubs.
