I have a cute orange tree which lives outside all summer, and spends the coldest days in a sunny window inside. So, this orange tree had abundant flowers and abundant little oranges, but only one grew to maturity. I am told that a citrus tree will purge the fruit that it cannot support.
Anyway, I have one mature orange on the tree and I don't know when to pick it? I think it will just stay there until I do, but I don't want to blow it.
I'm thinking of picking it when the grands are here over Christmas, but maybe I should pick it now?
Then you would be mistaken. An orange can be orange and still be very hard and sour. Our Valencia oranges were often ripe when they looked greenish or yellow.
Feel the orange. Is it rock hard, or does it give slightly? I would say pick one to see if it comes off the tree easily, but if you only have one, that's not the best plan.
