My postal carrier is taking a shortcut through my garden which backs up on my neighbor's driveway. Rather than walking the 25 feet down to the sidewalk and walking up my neighbor's driveway, he just walks through my garden. I have known for awhile that they have been doing this, but only catch them actually doing it once in awhile. I caught him again yesterday and asked him not to walk through my garden, so of course, he went ahead and did it anyway. I asked him why he did that and he shrugged. I was furious.

They do it in all seasons, it doesn't seem to matter to them that there is something growing there. This last summer I found my very nice birdbath broken on the ground when I put it in that area.

What would you do?

The only alternative I think I have is to put up a 4' fence all the way down the neighbor's driveway- about 25', likely an expense of about $1500.

So frustrating! Any thoughts or suggestions?

If you are certain your mail carrier is damaging your garden, complain to the post office. I sure wouldn't put up a $1500 fence to stop it. That's cutting off your nose to spite your face.

I'm a letter carrier and I feel for you.

Hopefully the PO will understand what's going on and not automatically side with the carrier.

Despite the conflicts between labor and management, I've seen supervisors side with carriers over really stupid things. At least this is the case in my office. So don't be surprised if the PO gives you a strange vibe.

Carriers are told to take the shortest distance to the mailbox, so that could be the reasoning here. Or the carrier could just be a miserable person who takes his frustrations out in pathetic ways. I don't care what the PO says, no one's property should be destroyed.

One of my coworkers had a hissy fit because a customer dared to complain that * was ruining his lawn by walking over it.

I was a sub on that route and you could see the path through the grass. I just walked up another way where there was a paved area and it took no more time.

Poo. Lots and lots of poo!

I bet if you place cow dung, dog dung, or any type of animal dung on the path they are using, they won't use it again!

I was going to suggest bear leg-hold traps, but I think this is a more civil suggestion. Sheep poo is especially odorous...and good for your garden, too.

or you could just make a gravel path for him to walk on and landscape around it.

Get some caution tape and do up his improvised pathway like a crime scene.

Plant Barberries, nettles, burdox and poison ivy!

I would try the Post Master first. See what they have to say.

I like the poo ideas and motion activated sprinkler idea! You could also plant some thorny rose bushes there.
