I was given a 4 foot (including the pot) Norfolk Island Pine for Christmas and know absolutely nothing about plants. However, I'm pretty sure it needs to be in a larger pot. Any idea what size pot I should get? Are all potting soils the same?
All potting soils are not the same- do not plant a house plant in an overly heavy soil-most like something lighter, and that drain well. Use a high quality potting mix only.
The Norfolk Island Pine is from Norfolk Island in the South Pacific off the east coast of Australia. It is basically a sub tropical to temperate evergreen that will tolerate light to medium frosts.

I just procured one at Christmas as well. Like cil said, do not overwater, but do not let it get too dry either. In my experience, they more than others require a really delicate balance between dry and moist.
Keep it inside until the threat of heavy frost has gone. I put one on a fire escape once and it was destroyed by the cold.
They're great trees. People have them in their yards in California. I moved mine to a larger and nicer pot and so far its doing really well.
