I can't help but thinking everytime I read the subject of this thread, Where do Lightening Bugs Live?, "They live in little itsy bitsy light houses".

I need sleep.

I lived in Maryland (Silver Spring & Rockville) as a child, and remember catching lightening bugs in jars... soooo cool! I wish California had them too.

Default Not in Vegas!

No lightning bugs here in Vegas! I wish there were. We have been here 10 years, originally from Long Island, seemed that back in the 70's & 80's i saw & caught so many of them! Not sure if its like that anymore.

We got plenty of them in Minnesota, my daughter like to catch a bunch of them and stick them into jars, and then after she gets her fill of them she lets them all go, that way they can go back to their families.
She is so sweet, and thoughtful, she does the same with ladybugs. I should have nick named her buglet!!!!!

I grew up in Northern NY and we had tons of them in the summer. I moved to Florida 13 years ago and only saw them when I went home to NY to visit. This past winter we moved to the suburbs of Atlanta and we were outside a few weeks ago and they were all over! It made me so happy to see them again, I didn't realize it was something I missed until then. My three year old loves them, we go out almost every night to look for them.

We had the first ones last week. Summer will be here in no time. It is a good reason to break out the cocktail shakers and call neighbors:>)

Isn't it the male trying to attract the female? That may then be my Better Half's fascination with flash lights.

I've heard they begin to disappear west of the Mississippi River. Not sure why.
