That's unusual. Most will not. The only areas where we have a uh... 'turd buildup' are lose dirt. The rock and gravel areas are poop free despite living in a neighborhood with a dozen free roaming cats. Exception being a pile of paver base I left out. That was as popular as the catnip. Houseplants were an issue at one point but covering the soil with river rock ended that.

I would not use moth balls. it is toxic to cats and I doubt you want to kill them. Put some moth balls in something you can poke holes in so the odor will get to the cats but they can't eat it.
I had already googled it. Just posted here for people's tried and true methods.
I just scattered the moth balls. Sadly people that let their cats roam make other people really dislike cats.

ugh, I just saw this thread. I have a little wall in our courtyard with rectangular flower pots, that cats seem to think is thier private littler pox, ugh.
since living in the city, we do have a terrible cat problem, ad several people feed them.

so, in my 5 rectangular flower pots, I have geraniums and those green and white vines, I bought black plastic forks and turned them fork side up in all the boxes, thus making it hard for the cats to squat or dig. I used them all. The black looks like dirt, so you cant really see them, and it seemed to work.

update, the lady that used to feed the cats either passed or moved because the house was knocked down, and I havent seen many cats this past summer.

I though the fork trick was pretty good.

O too, had also did the pepper thing like another poster stated, infortunetely, every rain, it washes away.

cats really are a PITA when it comes to gardening.....

A motion detector sprinkler works well but don't forget it's there.

A few of the ultrasonic repellers work but you have to be careful of the settings, childrens hearing and range.

A couple of others I've heard:

Clean the old hair out of the family hairbrushes and leave hair balls in the garden. Cats supposedly hate the smell.

Glass jars filled with water reflect light and can spook a thinking-about-squatting cat at night when their pupils are most dilated.

And, my personal favorite, even though it's not that practical for most of us. If you are lucky enough to live near a zoo, get a sack of lion poop and scatter it along the borders. WHAT would that cat be thinking??
