I have a number of large elephant ear philodendrons growing in my backyard (northeast Florida). Lately I've been finding that the conical-shaped shoots in the center of the plant have been neatly sawed off as if someone has taken a saw or a large pair of shears and cut about 4" up from the bottom of the shoot. Except for one, the shoots are left on the ground right there, and the one that wasn't I found at the entrance of an armadillo hole. I can't automatically suspect the armadillo is the culprit since I don't know if it dropped it there or some other animal did.

As I understand it, armadillos are basically bug eaters - maybe there are some bugs that live inside the shoot if it's the armadillo that is doing this. However, neither the removed part of the shoot nor the remaining stump have any teeth marks whatsoever.

We don't have any deer in our neighborhood and I've not seen any rabbits. We do have some raccoons. Other than that, the wildlife consists of birds, snakes, anoles, and palmetto cockroaches.

Anyone have any guesses what animal might be doing this? I know it's not humans - there's no easy access to the plants.
