I recently took down a tree in my front yard, but looks like some roots managed to survive the slaughter. Now, guess what, they are showing some sprouting. Any thoughts on what is best to eradicate this menace? I would like to get some good grass growing there by spring! Thanks for your help!

Still have the stump?

Drill holes and pour in glyphosate.

Or you can pack rock salt into the holes.

No stump?

Dig out the roots by hand, or paint glyphosate onto the new sprouts after they leaf or get to about 2inches. May take awhile though if the tree was large and had an extensive root system.

OP was talking about roots. Depending on the species some will live on and regenerate after removing stump.

Are you trying to grow anything near these roots? You could take a 12 spike and hammer yourself a hole ad pour copper sulphate in it. Make certain you don't want any plants nearby for a season and don't over-do. I use this product for my neighbor's tree, whose root are always messing with my yard.
Shop Roebic Laboratories, Inc. Foaming Root Killer 16-oz Drain Cleaner at Lowe's

This is designed to clean drains and is toxic to pets. Use extreme caution when using any chemicals. There are many formulas for this product. Please be careful, but this cured my root issues.
