Leafy greens, which require as little as two hours of full sunlight a day, are your best bet. These include lettuce, spinach, Swiss chard, arugula, endive, radicchio, kale, mustard, cabbage and bok choy. Herbs like cilantro, chives, mint and lemon balm will also grow in these shadowy conditions.

Basil, too. Basil can be treated kind of shabbily and still happily grow. Let one or two plants start blooming, though. The bees are gaga for basil flowers. I discovered that accidentally when I lazily did not pinch the flowers off a basil plant.
