Beautiful! That looks to me like an Amaryllis. It grows from a bulb.

Yup, amaryllis. Very popular christmas gift plant, you can often find them on sale around then. That one is pretty spectacular, but then they all are!

My mom had tons of amaryllis at our house in north Orange County. They came back every year without fail. Snails love them, though.
