I bought these 5 years ago from a now out of business nursery.
iirc (I probably don't) he called them "Japonica"
They don't look like any Japonica I've seen elsewhere.

But they do very well in shade/low light and I want more.
What are they?

The leaves don't look right for a japonica. Could be a type of laurel, which would make sense if they like shade.

Japanese privet, ligustrum japonicum, exactly what it is, fairly easy to start from cuttings, easier if presoaked in willow water. Willow water is water that willow switches have been rooting in, it promotes root growth in other plants.

"Japonica" is a non-specific name. It needs its species to be distinctive, eg: Camellia japonica or Ligustrum japonicum.

Other posters above have correctly identified it. ligustrum japonicum 'Japanese Privit'.

Last spring I planted these long my back fence to create a privacy hedge. I wish they DID grow as fast as kudzu - I'm trying to block out my neighbors (who don't like my fence aggressive dog (which doesn't surprise me)) as quickly as possible!
