Two feet high is way young for clemsons. They have a lot of growing yet to do. Fish fertilizer and enough water. When they get 5' to 6' high you start removing the leaves to force the growth into pods.

Mine started producing a few at 4' tall, now they're around 5' tall and producing lots of okra.

Thanks harry chickpea, which leaves do you remove? The lower ones are already wilting and falling on mine.

You can actually remove all of them once it has reached around 6'. Just wait until you start to see it producing, then trim as you will. You will want to wear long sleeves and gloves unless you are a masochist.

I have never removed any leaves and mine always produce until I don't want to see okra again. That is pretty much where I am right now.

They might not be "thorns" but they have a fuzz that can cause itching and rashes.

Another reason to remove the leaves is to make the harvesting easier and faster.

You can always freeze them. We use them mainly in beef stews.
