Newspapers are ok but you need to keep them from flying around so you can mulch on top.. Also, they are thin so they'll break down easier which isn't something you want for weeds during growing season...unless you use a ton of them.


Use Cardboard instead but make a large enough hole around your plants so water can penetrate through.


I just use cardboard on the walking paths and it's proven to work. I don't do it in the bed just because of size (I have 2 beds) and aesthetics

I prefer using cardboard, too. It's easier to handle. We put straw on top and it blocks most of the weeds. You can leave open strips between rows to plant in, cut holes, or just patch around existing plants. You'll still need to a bit of weeding, but it helps.

We use cardboard or newspaper, then a heavy layer of mulch hay. Look on craigslist and see if anyone has free mulch hay. I picked up 13 bales for free last week. Other years I've had to buy it for $2-4 per bale. Grass clippings can work too, but you need a lot to cover a garden of any size.
